Kalle and Elina Väätäinen

Kalle Väätäinen, Pastor of St. Peter’s Congregation of the Mission Diocese in Kuopio (city in central Finland) is leaving for mission work in Kenya with his wife Elina and daughters Ruusa and Elsa. They will move to Kisumu in July. Pastor Sebastian Grünbaum will replace Kalle in August.

The initial term of service is three years, with a decision on continuation to be made later. The Väätäinens are employees of the Evangelical Lutheran Mission Diocese of Finland (ELMDF), but will be working in Kenya for the LCMS(Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod) mission services.

Theological education in Matongo

Kalle will be assigned to Matongo Theological Seminary. This confessional educational institution belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya (ELCK), which is a partner church of the LCMS. The seminary trains pastors, deaconesses, and evangelists from various parts of East Africa.

Kalle will work as a theological educator and pastor of the seminary chapel. His assignments are to include conducting worship services, teaching both liturgy and other theological subjects, supporting students, and visiting their congregations. He will also hold teaching seminars in Kenyan Church congregations.

Kalle says he is eagerly awaiting his work: The key is that the gospel of Jesus should be clearly heard in the preaching of future pastors.

– Currently, the greatest problems in Kenya are precisely the separation of Law and Gospel. Only the pure Gospel is the power of God.

He is already somewhat familiar with the seminary and its surroundings from previous teaching trips, but there is much to learn from the new culture. Kalle is also looking forward to visiting congregations in different parts of East Africa.

Elina’s tasks

Elina’s work will consist of both her connection to Matongo College and her duties in Finland with the Mission Diocese’s office. Initially, her main task will be to take care of the family’s everyday life and help her daughters adapt to their new school and cultural environment.

Later, Elina plans to teach in the seminary’s deaconess program and do remote work from Finland.

– The leap into the unknown feels exciting and even scary. I also think a lot about our sons and our parents back in Finland. But at the same time, I feel God’s strong calling to mission, Elina describes.

Interchurch cooperation

This endeavor started when the LCMS proposed recruiting the Väätäinens under an Alliance Missionary agreement. Ville Typpö, Chair of the Mission Council of the ELMDF, and Joel Kerosuo, Dean of the Diocese, prepared the agreement, which was signed in Helsinki in November.

According to Kerosuo, this is a significant step for the Missionary Diocese: For the first time, the church is sending its own workers directly abroad. Previously, the church has participated in mission work through, among other things, designated missionaries and the work of the Lutheran Heritage Foundation. The new agreement opens up a reliable and well-thought-out channel for international cooperation.

“Don’t give fish, teach how to fish”

According to Kalle, Kenya faces many of the same issues as Finland: How to finance congregational activities, build community, and organize administration wisely? The Väätäinen couple’s task is to share their experiences of building a self-sufficient church. The goal is to support local Christians in taking responsibility for their own church – not to create dependency, but to strengthen sustainable activities.

Prayer is needed

The Väätäinen family’s farewell party and departure celebration will be held on May 14 in Kuopio. They invite us to join the celebration and to be their intercessors.

Ville Typpö, Chair of the ELMDF Mission Council, says that life in the mission field often involves constant uncertainty and adversity. However, God’s grace carries us through:

– Even though many things change, people are essentially the same everywhere, just as God and His Word are the same everywhere. It is always good and safe to be in His service! His grace is sufficient even for mission workers!
